A Message from Fr. George

“Behold the Lamb of God” were the words exclaimed by John the Baptist as he watched Jesus walk by. At that moment, the lives of John’s disciples were changed forever as they heard and followed Jesus. But even in following Him, they sought more… they sought to understand. In a similar way Samuel also sought to understand as he ran to Eli after hearing the Lord calling to him in the middle of the night. In his wisdom, Eli told the youth to respond to the voice by saying: “Speak, for your servant is listening.” And thus, Samuel’s life was changed forever as the Lord remained with him, making his words effective to all who would hear.

Jesus also calls us by name, and desires to change us forever. Remember, Jesus gave a new name to Simon. He called him Cephas (Peter), and we all know the rest of the story! Our call to live authentically in Jesus is no ordinary task. It is rooted in grace and effort. Do you hear his voice? Following Jesus means commitment. It means sacrifice and trust. Jesus will help us; otherwise, he would never have called us. The disciples needed to learn what it meant to follow. They made mistakes. At times, they even acted foolishly. But they saw and believed and were filled with the Holy Spirit. The Good News: He will help us too!

Isn’t it interesting how life can change when we have not only truly heard but also acted upon God’s call? Choosing to follow Christ in all we think, do, and say should be the root of our day. And yet, we forget, fail, or deliberately choose to ignore what we have been taught. Remember, as members of the Body of Christ, we have been called in and through our Baptism to be faithful. We are called to not only the foundations of our faith, but also to the teachings of our Catholic Church. So… where do you need to be changed? How does your personal call to follow Christ need to be reflected in 2021?

That personal call is one that should define our Christian Morality and guide us in our decision making. Think about the Ten Commandments, Eight Beatitudes and Two Laws of Love. Are you able to name them? (For reference, check out the following scriptures: Exodus 20: 1-17; Matthew 5: 1-12; and Matthew 22: 34-40).
